5.5mm Gauge Diesel “Wren” 2006D029
This scratch built loco uses parts from an Eggerbahn diesel, and it looks as if the unusual gauge of 5.5 mm (or 16 ½ ” in 4 mm scale) was determined by how far the wheels could be pushed in before the worm gear would short them out!

K’s Southwold loco body 2006H003
Introduced in the late 1950’s / early 1960’s whist being advertised as a body kit for a 00n3 (12mm gauge) Southwold 2-4-0, chassis to be scratch built by the builder (an advert suggests a K’s Mark II motor and 10mm wheels), it has also been described as a 5.5 mm scale kit. However, comparing dimensions of the kit in comparison with the Southwold loco reveals it to be a bit ‘rubber-scaled’ being anything from 4 mm to 6 mm scale depending on what you measure! The result is that it’s much closer to the Manx Northern and County Donegal 2-4-0 locos in 4 mm scale, and several of the more recent Malcolm Savage Models reissue of the kit have been built this way.

Egger diesel ex David Mander 2007D014
As I typed in an earlier caption about the Egger diesels many of the early 009 modellers were happy to mix and match HOe 3.5 mm scale) items with their 009 (4 mm scale) models, and to prove the point here is this example of the Eggerbahn diesel as used by David Mander on his Stronachlachar Railway. It is, however fitted with a non-standard chassis – perhaps Mr. Mander had problems with the original 9 volt Marx Microperm/Nanoperm 9 motor in common with so may other 009 modellers with their 12 volt power supplies?
