009 News Printing and Distribution

The April edition of 009 News should be arriving with members at the moment. With the impact of Covid-19 on everyday life being severe, this may affect our ability to get the 009 News printed and distributed. At the moment the good news is that the member who organises our printing has confirmed that he is confident that he can get the May News printed and also distributed, if our usual team are not able to do this.

Obviously things can change at a moment’s notice, so despite people’s efforts, perhaps we won’t be able to do this as normal. If that is the case the Committee will do its utmost to get the News to as many members as possible electronically, while intending to catch up with print copies as soon as we can.

To make this work, we do need up-to-date email addresses. Brian Ellsmore, the membership secretary, is currently checking every member’s email we have (about 75% of the membership), but if you know of somebody who might not have made the Society aware of their (latest) email address, please ask them to let Brian know at memsec@009society.com as soon as possible.

This does not affect our arrangements for Overseas members who receive electronic copies.

We will keep people informed here and on the forum. We hope none of this becomes necessary, but it feels wise to have a plan in place in case it does.

009 Society AGM Postponed

As many of you will know, the 009 Society Annual General Meeting was to be held during Narrow Gauge South. As a consequence of the announced cancellation of Narrow Gauge South, the Annual General Meeting can no long take place as planned so we are putting in place alternative arrangements, developed over the last few days as a contingency. More will follow in 009 News, the Society Forum, Facebook page and website.

Covid-19 and Exhibition/Show Notices

In light of the constantly changing situation regarding the Covid-19 epidemic and the effect on shows and exhibitions we have put a new board onto the members’ forum onto which exhibition and show organisers (must be a 009 Society member with forum access) can post up to date information regarding any shows affected by this epidemic.

THIS NEW BOARD IS NOT FOR ANY GENERAL DISCUSSION ON CORVID-19 OR ANY OTHER MATTER. IT IS PURELY A NOTIFICATION AREA FOR LAST MINUTE NEWS ON FORTHCOMING SHOW CANCELLATIONS ETC.

North West Narrow Gauge Show, Rainford 15th February – The 009 Official Sales Stand will not be attending.

Due to the recent injury of the Society’s Sales Officer and his ongoing recovery, it has been decided that the 009 Society Official Sales Stand will NOT be attending the North West Narrow Gauge Show at Rainford on Saturday 15th February 2020. We apologise for the inconvenience and hope normal service will resume in the near future.

The local group’s sales stand WILL be in attendance, ably run by Stan Williams with his usual well stocked tables of second-hand bargains.

Library of 009 News Now Online

The 009 Society is pleased to announce that we are now in the process of putting our back catalogue of 009 News online in PDF format for access by our registered members.

With many years of 009 News to digitise and to add this project will take us some time but we now have 20 years of 009 News already online.

We are also in the process of producing indexable lists of the contents of the Library’s 009 News so that it will be possible for both the public and members to find articles of interest by using the search function on our site – but only our members will be able to read the article, so if you want to read our Libary of 009 News then please Join Us!

Welcome to the new 009 Society website

I am delighted to welcome you to the new 009 Society Website. Our new Webmaster, Andrew Jeffcock, has been working hard to produce something which we hope is both interesting and helpful to support you in your chosen railway modelling scale. Our original website was starting to show its age and we decided to bring it into the 21st century by using the WordPress content management system (CMS). This gives us the ability to make it easier to respond to new ideas and to provide new services to our members.

Some of the new features we have on this website are:

  • New public pages to advertise the work of the Society, its aims and to provide information on exhibitions where you can see our members’ layouts.
  • The publication of the 009 Society’s Heritage Collection of models showing the development of the hobby and the Society’s role in preserving these unique models for future generations.
  • A new responsive website design viewable easily on phones and tablets as well as on laptops or desktops.
  • A members-only area where Society specific information and news can be seen by registered members of the Society.
  • Previous issues of the 009 NEWS in digital PDF format in the members-only library.
  • Member’s layouts on display in dedicated pages, with images, videos and contact details, for exhibition organisers to see the quality of the modelling.
  • Enhanced security by using Secure Socket Layer (SSL) encryption between your device and our server. Look for the little padlock in the URL address bar.

So welcome to the 009 Society website, we hope that you enjoy your visit. We shall have new members’ services coming in the next few months, so watch this space!

Julian Evison, Chairman, The 009 Society.

A message from your Webmaster

Welcome to the new 009 Society website. After several months of preparatory work by the Committee, several Society members and myself we have been able to design and bring to fruition what we hope is a web site that will promote the 009 Society and will provide the public and Society members with a useful resource on narrow gauge modelling in the future.

I am Andrew Jeffcock, a semi-retired professional web designer of 20 years experience, a former qualified explosives engineer, research scientist and incident investigator for a Government research laboratory. It has been a pleasure to design this website and I am indebted to the 009 Society for providing me with this opportunity to produce this site utilising some of the latest developments in web design and content management.

If any member has any problems with this web site then please contact me via email to webmaster@009society.com. Suggestions for improving the site and forum can be posted on the forum for discussion.

Andrew Jeffcock, Webmaster, The 009 Society
