Changes to Layouts at Statfold Exhibition

Unfortunately the layouts North Rokeby and Wheal Kist are no longer able to attend. Prescot Aggregates is also unable to attend.

However, I am very pleased to say that Creag Dhubh Summit by Ted Polet and Yurze Ore Mine by Lucien Eijdems will both now be joining us.

Regrettably we also have to report a couple of late withdrawals, Abberley and Malvern Light Railway due to illness. We wish the members concerned a swift recovery.

50th Anniversary Event and Exhibition at Statfold Barn 16th + 17th September 2023

2023 is the 50th anniversary of the founding of the 009 Society. In the 50 years of its existence so far, it has grown to be the World’s largest Society for small scale narrow gauge railway modelling, with more than 2000 members.

To celebrate, we are taking over the Statfold Barn narrow gauge railway and museum on 16th and 17th September for a weekend of the very best of narrow gauge. As well as the full size railway giving rides with two engines in steam, we expect to have on display more than 50 layouts covering our family of scales and gauges. There will be specialist trade stands, our own sales stand and representation from the large manufacturers.

Members are able to buy tickets for the weekend via our online shop, as well as for a celebration dinner on the Saturday night. Non-members will be able to buy tickets in due course for the Sunday (only) via the Statfold Barn website.

We hope this will be a very enjoyable weekend and a suitable celebration of our first 50 years.

NARROW GAUGE NORTH 2023-11 March 2023

Andrew Kirkby (my Son), the organiser and supporter of Narrow Gauge North, passed away on the 4 January, having been ill since May last year.

However, whilst organising this year’s show, he has been ably assisted by his son Oli, and due to his efforts, the show will take place on the 11 March.

The show will be dedicated to Andrew, and we should like to raise as much money as possible for Sue Ryder Care-Wheatfields

Would you please support us by attending this, the last Narrow Gauge North.

Full details of the show can be found at www.narrowgaugenorth.org.uk

ANDREW KIRKBY FUNERAL NOTICE

Andrew’s funeral is on Thursday 9th February at 2.20pm, at Harrogate Crematorium, Stonefall Cemetery, Wetherby Road, Harrogate HG3 1DE

Narrow Gauge, Not Narrow Minded (with Ben Powell and Rob Rossington) - Railway Mania PODCAST #21

Ben Powell and Rob Rossington of The 009 Society join us for another look at narrow gauge modelling in this Railway Mania Podcast. They tell us about what the society can offer and the scope of what it covers (not limited to just 009 but 1:76 & 1:87 narrow gauge modelling in general).
We also look at how the modelling scene is changing for narrow gauge as more and more manufacturers offer ready-to-run examples.

Brian Guilmant RIP

It is with great sadness that I have to tell you that Brian Guilmant died this morning, 24th July 2020 in a hospice local to his home in Wimborne. Very many people in narrow gauge modelling will have met Brian in the course of his 40 year involvement in our hobby, being the founder and chief driver of the 009 Society second hand sales organisation; we have benefited immensely from his dedication and knowledge. He was also a stalwart member of the Wessex Narrow Gauge Modellers, hosting regular meetings and, in recent years, organising the Colehill exhibition.

Under current circumstances the funeral will necessarily be a private affair, but our thoughts are with Muriel his wife and their daughter Lizzie. They have asked that their privacy be respected, so please do not contact them by phone.

Thank you Brian, our old friend, for all you have done for 009 modelling and 009 modellers – few have equalled your immense contribution.

A full obituary will appear in due course.

Result of the 009 Society Bachmann Baldwin Competition 2020

The 009 Society recently held a competition for its members to suggest ways to improve aspects of the services that the Society provides for its members. The prize was a brand new Snailbeach Railway liveried Baldwin, courtesy of Bachmann Europe.  Congratulations go to the winner and we hope he enjoys his new locomotive.
